Houseboat History

The Liba Liba Houseboat Fleet were the first houseboats on the Murray River. Original proprietor Ian Showell, a local Renmark resident conceived the idea of a floating house while in Egypt. The boats he saw along the Nile became the inspiration for what is now a multi-million dollar Murray River industry. In 1961, the Liba Liba Houseboat Fleet launched the first of 30 craft, designed and built by Ian Showell.

The Fleet now consists of 14 unique rear paddlewheel houseboats. Since those early days, houseboat hire has become a very popular form of family holiday and there are now hundreds of these magnificent floating holiday homes plying the river from Goolwa in South Australia to Mildura in Victoria.

In November 2006, the Liba Liba Houseboat Company was sold to new owner/managers, Carissa & Greg Austin. After a freshening ‘facelift’, the Liba Liba Fleet have launched into a new era in the Liba Liba history book!
