BACKWATER DINGHY EXPEDITION

Discover the backwaters of the Murray on a backwater dinghy tour or canoe tour. You will see a very different side to this great river.

Experience the unique creeks and backwaters above Renmark in a 14ft aluminium dinghy, the Creek Rambler, with your Bookmark eco guide Allan Carthew. This area is listed with RAMSAR as a wetland of international significance. There are many opportunities for bird watching and photography. A 2 hour or 3½ hour expedition are available.

Alternatively, discover the serenity of the Murray River and paddle creeks and lagoons only minutes from Renmark with an opportunity of seeing a variety of wildlife including koalas, kangaroos and pelicans. Join the popular 2½ hour guided sunset tour or try the Moonlight Adventure Tour that meanders through haunting stands of river red gums. No experience necessary.

CALPERUM STATION

Located just outside of Renmark, the Ral Ral and Hunchee creeks meander through Calperum Station creating serene and idyllic settings. Set up camp, fish, catch yabbies, kayak and swim or simply relax and watch the native bird and animal life or photograph the wonderful sunsets. To book campsites or find our more about Calperum Station call into the office between 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

CHOWILLA STATION AND RESERVE

Located just 40 kilometres from Renmark, where the outback meets the river, are a wealth of natural, historic and cultural experiences. Go with a group and stay in the Shearers' Quarters overlooking the Murray River, hire a canoe and explore this pristine natural bushland or discover this peaceful location on a houseboat. Chowilla’s Shearers Quarters provide a unique experience for those wishing to escape to quieter and more laid back surroundings. McCORMICK CENTRE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Three kilometres outside Renmark is the McCormick Centre. It includes an interpretive model that shows the enormity and importance - and workings - of the Murray-Darling Basin. An environmentally and innovatively designed building, the McCormick Centre is a unique community facility that supports environmental education, research and nature based tourism. The man made wetland is home to a myriad of frogs, ducks, birds and other wildlife. Wander through the building and view educational displays and films regarding the Murray -Darling Basin and artwork of local and visiting exhibitions at selected times throughout the year.

National Parks

CHOWILLA GAME RESERVE

Over 17,000ha of floodplain and wetland are represented in the Chowilla Game Reserve. The area features great stands of majestic River Red Gum and hardy Black Box trees. Large numbers of waterbirds and other native fauna can also be seen. The park provides great opportunities for fishing, walking, canoeing, bird watching and extensive camping areas. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash and kept under control at all times.

CHOWILLA GAME RESERVE BORDER CLIFFS

South of the River Murray, lies a small section of the Chowilla Game Reserve known as Border Cliffs. Accessed via Murtho Road, Paringa, this section offers excellent opportunities for camping, fishing, canoeing and bird watching. The Border Cliffs Customs House Walking trail is an excellent way to experience and learn about wetland environments.

DANGGALI CONSERVATION PARK

Danggali is the largest of the Riverland Parks and is known for its vastness and wilderness appeal. Dominated by mallee scrub, Red & Western Grey Kangaroos are common and many semi-arid land bird species are present. The park provides opportuniites to enjoy remote area camping, birdwatching and the chance to explore relics of pastoral history. Due to the remoteness of the park, visitors are advised to take sufficient food, water and fuel with them. The camping areas are accessible to conventional vehicles however some sections of the park are only accessible by 4WD. Dogs are not permitted.

MURRAY RIVER NATIONAL PARK - BULYONG ISLAND

Bulyong is an island, only accessible by boat, just out of Renmark between the main Murray River and the Ral Ral Creek area and is a favourite place for anglers, small dinghy users, houseboats, canoeists and campers. It forms part of the River Murray floodplain and when in flood it includes several significant areas of waterfowl inhabitants. Dogs are not permitted.


MURRAY RIVER NATIONAL PARK - LYRUP FLATS

The park encompasses an area along the floodplain on the northern side of the River Murray, opposite the township of Lyrup. Lyrup Flats provides wonderful opportunities to birdwatch, fish, camp, moor a boat and bushwalk. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash and kept under control at all times.
