OLD CUSTOMS HOUSE
The Old Customs House was originally established to take some control over the large volume of river craft travelling between various ports on the Murray River. New South Wales, which claimed the river as part of its colony, built customs houses at its state borders to impose duties on items being transported by river from Victoria and then from South Australia. This caused much dissent and anger with other colonies and they too eventually established customs houses at state borders. On 8th April 1884, (3 years before Renmark was established) a reserve for a customs house to be known as Port Murthoo (close to the Victorian border) was gazetted. In 1901, Federation brought an end to customs houses, free trade was allowed between states.
In 1902, the Commonwealth Gazette announced the Customs House at Port Murthoo (known today as Border Cliffs) in the State of South Australia was to close. Today, the Customs House Houseboats operates from the Old Customs House, which is a private home and a general store, open from 9am to 5pm everyday except for Christmas Day. Some supplies are available such as ice, fishing bait and some tinned foods. Customs House Houseboats has a fleet of 8 boats ranging from 6 berth to 12 berth and remains the only company moored between Lock 6 and Wentworth, a distance of 220 river kilometres.

OLIVEWOOD HISTORIC HOMESTEAD AND MUSEUM
The home of the Chaffey Bros, founders of Australia’s first irrigation settlement in Renmark in 1887. The Chaffey Brothers were Canadian by birth and had previously founded successful irrigation settlements in California, USA. The brothers had been invited to Australia during the course of a tour of America by Alfred Deakin, a member of the Victorian Parliament of the day, to investigate the possibility of establishing an irrigation colony in Australia. The chosen land was that of Mildura. The Victorian Parliament decided to negotiate. In the meantime, South Australia Premier Downer contacted the Chaffey Brothers and immediately made land available on the Murray.
The agreement to establish the Renmark Irrigation Colony was signed on 14th February 1887. This made Renmark the first irrigation colony in Australia. A National Trust property since 1979, view the pine log home, which was occupied by Charles Chaffey and his family, early photos, collection of photography equipment and plenty of interesting memorabilia. Light luncheon by arrangement.

PARINGA BRIDGE
The Paringa Suspension Bridge is one of only four still spanning the Murray River. Officially opened on 31st January 1927, the lift span still opens to allow river cruisers and houseboats to ply the waters of the Murray. The Bridge lifts Monday – Friday at 9.30am and 2.30pm depending on river traffic. In the early days, a hand winch ferry was in operation and after came a motorised ferry before the Bridge was built. The centre lane was used as a rail track until 1986 and was removed when the Renmark Railway Station closed in 1982. The centre lane is now a bike and pedestrian track.
